Slow Living – what is slow living?

A philosophy of life for a more conscious and calmer existence

We live in a world that is constantly moving forward and at a fast pace. What you do plays a big role in society, more than how you feel and whether you have balance in your life. Slow living became a counterpoint to this stressful life, a way of living more harmoniously and more stress-free. It is about slowing down the pace and living here and now, more consciously. By prioritizing quality over quantity and presence over speed, slow living can contribute to a deeper sense of satisfaction and happiness.

What is slow living?
Slow living is about consciously choosing a slower lifestyle that promotes meaning. It is not a question of doing everything slowly, but rather of doing things at the right pace and in the right way to create balance and harmony. The philosophy has its roots in the slow food movement, which started in Italy in the 1980s as a reaction against the fast food culture. Since then, the concept has grown to encompass more aspects of life, such as work, travel, and relationships.
Basic principles of slow living
Slow living is based on a few important points to consider:

1. Being aware and living in the present. The decisions you make should be based on consideration and well-being for your own good. Listen to your needs and prioritize what is important to you.

2. Living a little simpler by removing things that create distraction. By removing all unnecessary excess in life, you can spend time focusing on important things instead. It's not just about decluttering your things but also removing other stressors that cause your precious time to be wasted on unimportant things such as decluttering your calendar, your email, your friends, etc.

3. Protecting the environment and thinking sustainably. The choices we make should not only give us satisfaction but also be from an environmental point of view. To think that there will be a generation after us and probably more generations than that. Then we must take care of the planet we have.

4. To think quality over quantity no matter what. For example, it is better to have fewer deep relationships than more superficial ones. To engage in fewer activities that you are completely immersed in instead of having several activities that you do a little half-heartedly. It is about what you do creating meaning for you.
How can you integrate slow living into your everyday life?
Starting to live according to the slow living principles doesn't have to be difficult. Small changes in your everyday life can make a big difference. Here are some ideas:

1. Creating calmer morning routines. It is often said that morning begins the night before. This means that if you go to bed on time and have prepared yourself for tomorrow, it will go more smoothly than if, for example, you have to look for all your things you need. Get up when the alarm goes off and allow yourself to have a calm morning. The day will be more productive if you haven't stressed yourself out with the first things you do when you wake up.

2. Meditating and practicing mindfulness, which is about being present in the here and now. Try to turn off your thoughts and go completely into what you are doing. A good way is to do a body scan. It is a type of meditation where you focus and feel for one part of your body at a time to become aware of the senses in your body.

3. Prioritizing recovery is very important given the stressful society many people live in today. If you have a hard time with time, I recommend planning it in your calendar so that you don't miss your chance to recover. It's up to you what recovery means, but it can be walking in nature, sitting on the beach, reading a good novel, sitting still and just listening and breathing deeply, etc.

4. Having time to enjoy your food by eating slowly and consciously. Appreciate your meal. Slow living has a companion called Slow Food.

5. Removing all digital stimuli. Do you get stressed if you're not connected? Then you probably have an addiction to it and need to practice putting away digital media. Some people limit their screen time or designate parts of the home that are forbidden for electronic devices.
The benefits of slow living
Slow living can have a number of positive effects on both body and mind:
• Reduced stress: Slowing down and living more consciously can help reduce feelings of stress and overwhelm.
• Improved health: By prioritizing recovery and well-being, slow living can contribute to improved physical and mental health.
• Stronger relationships: Spending quality time with loved ones can strengthen relationships and create deeper bonds.
• Increased creativity: When we give ourselves time to think and reflect, we can discover new ideas and perspectives.
• Higher quality of life: Slow living helps us find joy in the little things and appreciate life in its entirety.

Conclusion
Slow living reminds us to slow down and appreciate the simple things. It is about finding balance in a hectic world and living a life that is both meaningful and sustainable. By integrating slow living into everyday life, we can create a life where we truly thrive – a life that is rich in presence, joy and harmony.
