I'm thinking about becoming more minimalist for 2025 but I have a question that I can't get clear on. I see all the pictures on Pinterest, all the Youtube clips about minimalism and I think if I can have the same aesthetic that has children, dogs, family. I love all these photos, I love how clean and nice it looks. I love how there are a few things in each picture but yet everything comes together so perfectly. I love when you decorate with green plants and that it can make up the decorations in the home. But on the other hand, I look at homes where there are a few things more but where each thing has a story to tell. Where the owner of the thing can tell you something amazing about every thing she owns. I think it feels so real. These homes tell a story that I can't see in these minimalist homes. And I'm thinking about my own home. It's not aesthetically correct, it certainly doesn't have the nice dashed lines that I love but they have exactly what I need, love and use.
Everyone knows that the ones we see via social media are usually not completely genuine. Behind the scenes, so to speak, they can look completely different than in the picture but it still gives the impression that they are this way people live and maybe it's like that for many but I can't help but think if several of these people have storage full of things. Somewhere people have to store the Christmas things, the suitcases, the children's sled to ride in the snow when not in use, the photo album, the wedding dress, etc. So I'm wondering if it's all just a show for the galleries or if people really have such stripped down homes that they really got rid of everything else. I have found that it is different in the generations and I have blog post about it if you would like to read more about my thinking about it. https://marysdeclutterlife.com/declutter-why-do-we-save-on-everything/
Something I have always thought is that if you store your things at your parents' house or in a storage room somewhere, you still own them and therefore they should be counted as belongings. You can't put your things at someone else's house and say you decluttered. Could it be that the people have their things hidden instead? Anyway, I like what I see in the pictures. And I admit that I have a storage full of all the things I listed above. Although I call myself a minimalist, I have a home with things, possessions I use, love and that mean something. So with all this I want to say that it is not about how other homes look like. You can certainly have a vision board but it's about what works for you and your family, what makes you feel good and what you need to live your life. It's about what's best for you.
