Declutter – your storage space

Struggling with an overflowing garage or an overflowing attic or basement? Or maybe you even have a junk room filled with things in your home? Then you should grab it immediately and here's why.
When several things are collected on a small surface, not only does the risk of fire increase, but the chances of attracting vermin among your things also increase drastically. And how fun would it be if one day you decide to go through all your cherished possessions and mice have decided to chew and drop their droppings all over your valuables. Or even worse, that you leave everything behind for your relatives to go through. Do you want them to look around among mouse droppings or other unhygienic things? So here is my advice to you, if the things are valuable, put them in a safe place and not among things that you just save in case you might need them someday. If they are valuable to you, they deserve a better place in your home than relegated to a storage place. And start decluttering now so that you or your relatives avoid that experience later.

As I also wrote, the risk of fire increases. Some insurance companies will not pay out any insurance if it is due to negligence which an overcrowded room with things can be as it is known to increase the risk of fire. In other words, it's time to grab your abundance of stuff.

Not only that many people have a home full of things, the garage, the attic and the basement or maybe the outhouse. Many people also pay expensive money to store their things in storage rooms that are rented. I have looked up prices on such stores and it is scary high. However, I must say that such storage facilities are worth their weight in gold if, for example, you live abroad for a year and need to store your things in the meantime (shipping your things is expensive) or if you run a business and need storage for your business. But for private individuals who just want more space to store unnecessary things on which deep down, will never be used again, so unnecessary costs. Spend the money on something more fun instead of rent for your things.
I always say, what you put in the basement you have to count on will be destroyed. By that I mean that basements have a high chance of flooding and burglary. The wind storage is more protected that way, but can of course also be affected. Therefore, you should never store valuables in your external storage. You can count on the fact that what you put there can never be used again, of course there are exceptions.
I keep replaceable things in my attic storage, such as Christmas items, pots for the balcony and suitcases. None of it has any personal value to me and I am fully aware that one day when I go there it might have been broken into or things might have been destroyed. Therefore, I make it a habit to visit that place periodically and also go through the things there periodically to constantly keep track of what is there and if there is anything that we can declutter. To that, I would like to say that I do not pay extra for a storage room, it is included in the rent of our apartment.

I have seen that a lot of newly built apartments here in Sweden now a days they have the storage in the apartment and that in itself is okay, but sometimes I don't understand what they were thinking when the storage is connected to the living room or bedroom. These places must be allowed to symbolize relaxation and should not be filled with things and yes, if we know it is there, our brain thinks about it whether we see the things directly or not. Therefore, we should make sure that the things we own are also used and/or loved by us.

So with this text I will say it straight. Go and declutter your storage space no matter what form you have it in. We can go into even more reasons to do it, such as so that your relatives don't have to do it when you're gone, but I'll stick to the cost of owning a lot of things, the risk of fire and the risk of vermin. I hope these reasons can still be motivating enough to at least take a look and try to start decluttering. And keep in mind that it is progress over perfection that applies. You don't have to do everything at once, but your goal now is to start, which is usually the most difficult. I believe in you. Now you just need to believe in yourself. Want to know how to start decluttering? I have several blog posts about this on my blog, just search for declutter and you'll get loads of inspiration for it. If you have questions, all you have to do is send a message. I reply to all serious messages. With that, I wish you luck.
