Declutter – for sale

How to minimaze your things and earn money.

What are the benefits of decluttering?
The benefits are many, such as time saved in the long run, less maintenance, more cost-effectiveness once you realize that you don't need to bring more unnecessary things into your home. There are also parts like more time with family and friends, less cleaning and less visual clutter that negatively affect the brain. But sometimes we own things that we don't really want to keep but that we know are worth money. Here I have to give a warning finger that time is also money. As advice, I can give, decide on an amount and everything you think you can get more for is sellable, the rest you can give to charity etc. There is no point in starting to sell things online that you can only get a few dollar for. If you are going to have a garage sale, it is perfect to bring everything you can think of selling but then set a rule that says that what you don't sell, you give directly to charity. This guide will help you organize, categorize, and market your belongings efficiently.
Steps to Declutter for Sale
1. Set Goals
Determine what you want to achieve from decluttering. Are you looking to make money, reduce clutter, or prepare for a move? Having clear goals will guide your decisions and help you stay focused on the goal.
I'll give an example which hopefully makes it easier to understand why you should have a goal. Take for example if you are decluttering to move. If you have another place in mind, maybe the big sofa won't fit in your new smaller living room. The hall furniture may not have the right place in your new home. The kitchen may be smaller and you need to reduce what you have in your cabinets. Yes, you probably understand where I'm coming from and yes, I only gave examples of smaller homes because once we have decluttered everything unnecessary, most people realize that they didn't actually need to live big.
On the other hand, if you are going to declutter and stay, then you may not even need to look over the furniture in the first stage but can leave it until you have removed so many things that it starts to look empty. But don't forget the furniture when you declutter, empty flat surfaces make us fill them up again.

2. Categorize Your Belongings
Separate items into groups:
Separating the categories directly and sorting what needs to be thrown away saves you from having to go through everything again and also saves you time. If you live in a country like me where you have to sort your waste, I recommend subcategories for what needs to be thrown away, such as paper in one bag, plastic in another, and so on.
I would also like to say that having a box for keeping is perfect if you are moving, but maybe not as realistic if you are staying. Then you might prefer to leave the thing where it is.
• Keep
• Sell
• Donate
• Discard

3. Evaluate Items
Assess the condition, usefulness, and value of each item. Generally, items in good condition that are functional or unique will sell better.
Throw away what is not saleable. No one wants to buy an old, stained linen shirt, and it is not possible to donate one. Tiny holes in clothing can be repaired if the garment is otherwise intact, clean and in good condition. Also, do not donate old cutting boards with scratches.
If it is difficult to decide, you can ask yourself this question, would I have bought it if I was shopping second hand, if you did not buy it yourself, probably no one else will either.

4. Clean and Prepare
Clean all items thoroughly to make them presentable. Check for missing parts, replace batteries, or polish surfaces to enhance the appeal.
This is very important if you want to make money. Items should be clean and in good condition, or you won’t need to spend time selling them unless they’re something out of the ordinary.

5. Research Market Value
Look into current prices for similar items to determine fair pricing. Platforms like eBay or Facebook Marketplace can offer insights into what buyers are willing to pay.
But don’t just stare at the price. Keep the goal in mind first and foremost.

6. Choose a Sales Platform
Decide where to sell your items:
• Online Marketplaces: Ideal for reaching a larger audience.
• Yard Sales: Perfect for selling locally.
• Consignment Shops: Great for specialty or high-end items.

7. Promote Your Sale
Good descriptions, good photos, and reasonable prices.

8. Negotiate and Close the Sale
Be prepared to negotiate prices with buyers. Maintain a friendly and professional manner to ensure a smooth transaction.
A good attitude and a good connection can open doors to future sales to the same person. Plus, some places offer buyers the opportunity to comment on the seller and who would buy from a seller with poor recommendations.
